McNeil, McCain, Smith, and Henderson begin the second day of their sit-in

On February 1, 1960, four African American students went into Woolworth's department store (all white) and purchased school supplies and sat at the lunch counter and ordered coffee. They were denied service. That did not stop them. They stayed at the counter until it closed and announced that they would come every day until they were given the same service as white customers.
Once the news of the daring sit-in spread, 29 African American students did the same the next day. By the end of the week, over 300 students were involved.
Over the course of two months, sit-ins had spread to 54 cities in nine states. By 1961, sit-ins had been held in more than 100 cities.
